EDU Economic Activity

As outlined under the ‘Enterprise Development Unit’ icon, the Council’s Enterprise Development Section is engaged in managing a number of Council/Community Committees, a host of other EU and mainstream Government-supported environmental improvement schemes, infrastructure initiatives and broad regeneration projects, the details of which are listed below:-

Overseeing Committees

    • Councils Economic Development Committee (Monthly)
    • Councils Integrated Rural/Agric/Fisheries Committee (Bi-Monthly)
    • Newry / Dundalk Joint Committee (Bi-Monthly)
    • Castleblayney and South Armagh Joint Committee (CASA) (Quarterly)
    • Warrenpoint Harbour Liaison Committee (Quarterly)
    • Mournes Employment Taskforce (Monthly)
    • Warrenpoint, Burren, Rostrevor Chamber Liaison Committee (Monthly)
    • Canal User Groups Taskforce (Twice yearly)

    The above committees have either just Councillors or a mix of Councillors and private/public/community Representatives who sit on them.

    • Kilkeel Public Realm Scheme
    • Hill Street Public Realm Scheme
    • Monaghan Street Public Realm Scheme
    • Canal Street/Sugar Island EI Scheme (Ph I)
    • Canal Quay / Canal Street / Sugar Island EI & Lighting Scheme (Ph II)
    • Warrenpoint Environmental Improvements (Queen Street & Dock Street)
    • Mourne Esplanade Beach Access EI Scheme
    • Mayobridge Environmental Improvement Scheme
    • Newtownhamilton Environmental Improvement Scheme
    • Ross Monument Refurbishment in Rostrevor
    • Carlingford Lough Shoreline Infrastructure Project
    • Newry Canal Public Art Feature

All of the above listed Environmental Improvement/Public Realm/Capital Schemes are at different stages of progression, from initial Concept Design/Consultation phase, Planning & Tender phase to being On-site/Recently Completed. As well as Council Capital Monies, significant grant aid has been obtained from key funders such as the Department of Social Development, Department of Agriculture & Rural Development, Peace Programme, INTERREG Programme, NI Arts Council and numerous other public & statutory sector bodies.

Other Infrastructure/Regeneration Initiatives

    • Working in p’ship with DSD on Delivering a new ‘Newry City Masterplan’
    • Overseeing deliver of SOAR Rural Development programme in the Newry & Mourne region
    • In partnership with DSD, administrating the deliver of the Newry Neighbourhood Renewal programme
    • Promoting and lobbying along with Newry Chamber for delivery on the Newry Greater Vision document
    • Exploring the refurbishment options relating to ‘Warrenpoint Baths’
    • Striving for the Development of a ‘Marina’ in Warrenpoint
    • Working with Local Community and Central Gov to re-develop former Army Barracks site in Forkhill
    • Continuing to explore redevelopment of Newry’s Albert Basin site (www.albertbasin.com)
    • Working in p’ship with Private/Public sector to ensure better telecommunications for the district
    • Developing closer linkages with County Louth in relation to Newry/Dundalk joint activity and the Twin-City Concept.
    • Lobbying for Greater Infrastructure Linkages such as the Southern Relief Road & Narrow Water Bridge Proposals.
