Newry and Mourne Community Safety Partnership was formed in December 2004 following the Review of the Criminal Justice System in NI (2000).
The purpose of Newry and Mourne Community Safety Partnership is to make Newry and Mourne a safer place for those who live, work and visit the area. The key priorities are to:
- Reduce anti social behaviour
- Reduce violent crime
- To increase confidence in the police and criminal justice system
- To reduce fear of crime
The work of Newry and Mourne Community Safety Partnership includes:
- Speaking to local communities about their concerns
- Promoting partnership working between local communities and voluntary and statutory agencies
- Supporting NI wide projects such as Neighbourhood Watch
- Developing local projects throughout Newry and Mourne and funding local initiatives
Initiatives include:
- Implementation of CCTV in Kilkeel, Warrenpoint and Newry
- Development of Community Television Network
- Neighbourhood Watch
- Bogus caller training
- Safer Halloween initiatives
- Midnight soccer
- Youth diversionary projects
- Peer Leadership
- Light up the Night
- Night Time Economy
- Prevention Training (Healthy relationships and bullying)
Structure of the Partnership
The structure of Newry and Mourne Community Safety Partnership changed a number of years ago, as outlined in the Strategic Assessment 2008-2011. (Link to strategic assessment here)
Three new groups were established to replace the former operational tier of the Newry and Mourne Community Safety Partnership, as follows:
The Newry Community Safety Support Group
The South Armagh Community Safety Support Group and
The South Down Crime Reduction Action Group
The Chairpersons from each of the above three groups represents the groups on the Strategic Tier of the Community Safety Partnership and ensures that the views of the groups are conveyed to a Strategic level. The members of the former Operational Tier will continue in the area groups, particularly with project groups.
