Newry Chamber of Trade
Newry also has a pro-active Chamber
of Trade with the objective of promoting the strengths and benefits
of Newry as a centre of excellence in retailing, commerce and professional
services. The Newry Chamber of Trade celebrated its 20th
anniversary on Tuesday 21 April 1998. The current office bearers
are Mr D McChesnes, Cathal Bros Shoeshop, President; Mr Peter
Murray, Secretary (Tel No: 028 30264627) and Mrs Nicola Quinn, Treasurer
(Tel: 028 30261010).
Recent activities undertaken by the
Chamber include the promotion of the Newry Quality Retail Scheme,
which involved a detailed training programme to enhance retailing
skills within the town. This scheme was the first to be implemented
in Ireland. Also, the Chamber has been instrumental in promoting
the display of floral baskets by retailers in Newry, which has greatly
enhanced the presentation of the town. A further example is the
key role played by the Chamber in bringing the new Town Centre Manager
position to reality. Further details on the Newry Retail sector
are provided in section 12.
