Newry and its surrounding area is proud of its green environment reputation, free of old smoke industries, road traffic congestion and nuclear sites. Less than 15 minutes drive by car from Newry are areas of outstanding natural beauty including the Mourne Mountains which lie within a 25 -mile circle 15 summits rise to over 2,000 feet, with tracks for walking along heather, by lakes and streams. This is Northern Ireland's favourite area for Rock Climbing. Places like Kilbroney Park in Rostrevor provide an excellent place for pony trekking, Hill walking, Camping and Caravanning as well the Slieve Gullion Mountain and Forest Park where there is a drive which winds nearly to the top of the mountain, and paths continue to 1,900 feet. There are Caravan and Picnic sites as well as a Visitors Centre.

Similarly Carlingford and Omeath within 15 minutes of Newry on the Southern side offer beautiful relaying surroundings and facilities, not to mention the scenic Greenore Golf Course.
