Newry and its surrounding area is proud
of its green environment reputation, free of old smoke industries,
road traffic congestion and nuclear sites. Less than 15 minutes
drive by car from Newry are areas of outstanding natural beauty
including the Mourne Mountains which lie within a 25 -mile circle
15 summits rise to over 2,000 feet, with tracks for walking along
heather, by lakes and streams. This is Northern Ireland's favourite
area for Rock Climbing. Places like Kilbroney Park in Rostrevor
provide an excellent place for pony trekking, Hill walking, Camping
and Caravanning as well the Slieve Gullion Mountain and Forest Park
where there is a drive which winds nearly to the top of the mountain,
and paths continue to 1,900 feet. There are Caravan and Picnic sites
as well as a Visitors Centre.
Similarly Carlingford and Omeath within
15 minutes of Newry on the Southern side offer beautiful relaying
surroundings and facilities, not to mention the scenic Greenore
Golf Course.
