As part of its involvement in the Southern Waste Management Partnership (SWaMP2008) Newry and Mourne District Council has been promoting the Cash for Clobber Week to local schools in association with Cookstown Textile Recyclers for five years.
The scheme has been extremely successful helping to divert waste away from landfill, providing much needed funds for schools and the designated charity.
In November 2009 15 schools took part, diverting a total of 6,652 kgs away from landfill, raising £5,985 for school, funds and £332 for the NI Cancer Fund for Children.
The Council hosted a prize giving presentation to recognise the efforts of the top 6 schools. Mullaglass Primary School and St Mary's High, Newry received £100 for collecting the most textiles per school head. Four runners up - Newtownhamilton PS, Grange PS, Windsor Hill PS and St Joseph PS, Meigh - all received £50 each.
Mayor Councillor John Feehan congratulated all the schools for their participation in the project and commented that “The Cash for Clobber scheme works on three levels. It is an ideal way for schools to make some much needed funds; it helps to support a worthy charity and it also benefits our environment by reducing the amount of waste going to landfill.”
