Site
Aughnagun Landfill Site opened in 1996
and is currently where Newry and Mourne District Council’s
domestic waste is deposited.
The site had an original capacity of
1,300,000 cu. m.
The current usage of the site is approximately
50,000 tonnes per annum. 40,000 would be Newry and Mourne’s
domestic waste, 10,000 tonnes would be commercial operators.
The current capacity of the site is
approximately 900,000 cu. m. giving a projected lifespan of approximately
14 years.
A high percentage of the domestic waste
that enters the Landfill Site could be recycled, such as green waste,
glass, paper, cardboard, wood and metal, textiles, plastic, mixed
cans, etc.
It is the public’s responsibility
to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
to STOP these valuable commodities going to waste.
The Landfill Site has an adjoining
Civic Amenity Site (1 of 7 in the Newry and Mourne Area) for the
public to recycle.
