The Recycling Bins Campaign

Introduction

The Council has introduced a Colour Coded System, to enable recycling materials to be wheeled from kerbsides at participating households.

Brown Bin is for compostable wastes

Blue Bin is for dry-recycable wastes

Brown Bin

It is estimated that up to 50% of household waste is made up of kitchen and garden waste. Approximately 10,000 households have received a brown bin to collect this waste. This will help to reduce the amount of waste which goes to landfill in the Newry and Mourne District Council area. All waste collected in the brown bins will be made into peat free garden compost.

Blue Bin

The Blue wheeled bin is for the collection of dry-recyclable waste only, specifically paper, cardboard, aluminium tins, steel cans, empty aerosol cans & plastic bottles. Unfortunately at present, due to health & safety risks no glass or textiles can be put in the bin. The Council has now distributed over 35,000 blue bins meaning that almost 100% of the householders in the District now have a blue bin for recycling.
