Northern Ireland Goes Smoke Free
Northern Ireland
goes smoke free on 30 April 2007. Most
businesses will be affected including factories, offices, bars and
restaurants as well as work vehicles and public transport. Other
enclosed public places such as community and church halls, sports
centres, shopping centres, schools and hospitals will all become
smoke free.
Under the new
legislation, businesses will have to ensure that no
one smokes on their premises if it is enclosed or substantially
enclosed and must display no smoking signs.
Within Environmental
Health departments, a Smoke Free officer
and Environmental Health Officers will provide information and
advice to businesses on the legislation and help them to get ready
to comply with the new laws. Newry and Mourne Smoke Free Officer
is Sharon Walker. Sharon can be contacted on:
028 3031 3100 or email sharon.walker@newryandmourne.gov.uk
Experience from
other countries such as Republic of Ireland and
Scotland has shown that those businesses who were prepared for
smoke free legislation found the transition easier.
A template smoke free policy and other information are available
on this site for your use.
