Working for Equality

The Equality Unit Strategic Plan 2008-09 is currently being updated and will cover the period 2009-11

Service areas:

Strategic Planning section
This oversees the Council’s performance management framework. It enables the Council to develop, deliver and review its Corporate Plan and assists Departments in developing their Departmental Plans.

Equality section
This helps integrate equality and diversity into all areas of Council service delivery, decision-making and policy development. It takes account of the Section 75 statutory duties to promote equality of opportunity and good relations.

Good Relations section
Our work is underpinned by the Section 75 statutory duty to promote good relations between persons of different religious belief, political opinion or racial group. We promote good relations both internally with employees and Councillors, and externally with the community.

Corporate Communication / Public Relations
We deal with all media queries and co-ordinate press statements through our corporate press office and we produce corporate publications. We also organise all receptions, and civic and special events.

Member services
This provides a direct personal service to the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and 28 Councillors. It entails maintaining a diary of engagements, arranging appointments, and providing advice and briefings to ensure they are able to fulfil their functions.
