Safety Youth Competition
Newry and Mourne
Community Safety Partnership are now in their third successive year
of running their annual Youth Awards Competition. The Youth Awards
Competition is used to give young people from across the Newry and
Mourne area a platform to voice their opinions on issues relating
to Community Safety. Newry and Mourne Community Safety Partnership
feel that the competition is an excellent way to engage with the
youth of the district as well as providing them with the opportunity
to explore important themes.
The entries
in last year’s competition showed the extent of the talent
of the students in Newry and Mourne. We received exceptional entries
in all categories and made the 6, first place entries into short
films, which were broadcast on our community television network.
These winning films can be seen on the media player on the Community
Safety Partnership webpage on the Newry and Mourne District Council
website - www.newryandmourne.gov.uk
Chris Fisher,
TV actor, presented winners with their prizes. Prizes last year
included Nintendo DS consoles, MP3 players and camera.

Feedback from
teachers following the competition was very positive and we have
taken these comments into consideration when developing the categories
for this year’s competition.
This year we
have separate categories for primary and secondary students to choose
from: -
Primary
- Good Relations
– We’re all the same
- Health –
Eat Well, Live Well
- Anti Social
Behaviour - Anti Social Behaviour and Me.
Secondary
- Alcohol
– The true price of alcohol
- Personal
Safety – Your Special, Stay Safe
- Hate Crime’s
– It’s inside that counts
We would like
students to think about their role in making a positive contribution
to the community in Newry and Mourne. If they were to give a message
to their peers, what would it be? If they were to give a message
to the wider community, what would it be? What would make Newry
and Mourne a safer, more peaceful place to live?
The message
should be conveyed via 6 scenes depicted on the storyboard with
accompanying strap lines to provide explanation. Entries will be
judged for innovation, relevance and the ability of the idea to
be translated onto film. So the quality of the drawing is not important.
Once again primary and post primary entries will be judged separately.
