Mourne River Soccer

Mourne River Soccer International Tournament 4th - 5th July 2008 at Newry City FC

Mourne River Soccer an exciting new sports initiative aimed at groups with Learning and Physical Difficulties.
As part of the Grassroots Development Centre in Newry and Mourne,
Mourne River Soccer aims to provide increased opportunities for young people to participate in soccer.
Playing, Coaching, Assisting or supporting soccer in the area of special needs is on the increase and Mourne River Soccer hopes to engage players and volunteers in a programme of events throughout the year.

As more children enter mainstream schooling we are committed to providing sessions and training for teachers to deliver inclusive soccer coaching into their schools and offer support for their requirements. Additionally we will actively encourage all local soccer clubs to train a member of their coaching staff in the area of Disability Soccer.

Mourne River Soccer will aim to work closely with all clubs to increase their involvement and their capacity to be inclusive of all our community. Clubs are very supportive and have indicated several ambitions they feel will enhance Mourne River Soccer as well as themselves as community clubs.

We would like to thank our partners without whom this tournament would not have been possible.

Mourne River Soccer has recently teamed up with Southern Heath Social Care Trust to provide Taster coaching sessions at Newry City FC.

The sessions “…were a great success” said Eilish Kilgallon from the Trust who
Coordinated the two 1-hour sessions.

The participants played small-sided games, 1 v 1’s, 2 v 2’s and received skills coaching.
“The drills and the session on the whole was inclusive and also instilled confidence in the players.” Added Eilish.

A couple of the players have been asked to join the Gold Medal winning squad from the Gateway Club in Newry as a result of their efforts.
They will join 16 members of the squad who will be competing in the Belfast Cup on the 21st and 22nd June.

Mourne River Soccer is an exciting new sports initiative aimed at groups with Learning and Physical Difficulties.
As part of the recently appointed Grassroots Development Centre in Newry and Mourne, Mourne River Soccer aims to provide increased opportunities for young people to participate in soccer.
Playing, Coaching, Assisting or supporting soccer in the area of special needs is on the increase and Mourne River Soccer hopes to engage players and volunteers in a programme of Coach Education.

Recently an audit was carried out to gauge the numbers of clubs, schools, players and volunteers with or without coaching awards or structures.

As part of the audit we have offered teachers, group leaders and carers to register their interest in our Coach Education Scheme that will provide them with the skills and qualifications, to assist and deliver events such as Mini Soccer and Holiday coaching courses.

As more children enter mainstream schooling we are committed to providing sessions and training for teachers to deliver inclusive soccer coaching into their schools and offer support for their requirements.
Additionally we will actively encourage all local soccer clubs to train a member of their coaching staff in the area of Disability Soccer by holding Coaching Disabled Footballers Awards (CDFA) Level 1 and 2.
In addition we will be offering the IFA level 2, Equity for Sport, Emergency Aid and Child Protection courses.

Mourne River Soccer will aim to work closely with Local clubs to increase their involvement and their capacity to be inclusive of all our community. Many clubs are very supportive and have indicated several ambitions they feel will enhance Mourne River Soccer as well as themselves as a community club.

Mourne River Soccer in partnership with Awards for All Lottery funding and Newry and Mourne District Council are pleased to announce that we have been successful in winning a grant for Coach Education and hope to offer assisted funding to successful applicants upto 20 places are available.
