Monday 25th February
2008
At Newry City
FC, the ‘bridge’ of South Down and South Armagh, there
was a link emerging in other ways that could inform the future of
Grassroots Development of football.
A series of
six unique workshops created as a result of an increasing number
of football clubs who seek assistance in managing their affairs
both on and off the field of play.
The workshops
are adapted from Rural Community Network’s Training for Trainers
course. Gareth Harper, Programmes Manager with Rural Community Network,
explained ‘At the core of Rural Community Networks’s
work is a commitment to building and supporting community development
practice across rural Northern Ireland.’ Gareth continued
‘It is great to see the course materials and skills gained
through participation on RCN’s Rural Community Development
Training for Trainers Course being developed, adapted and used to
support grass roots development work through this football focus.’
Over the past
18 months the Newry and Mourne Grassroots Development Centre has
engaged with eight clubs ranging from the Irish Premier League to
the Local Youth League, in a sustained effort to plan, action and
review the clubs’ performances in terms of administration,
coach and player development and most importantly, community outreach
events.
The
blend of increasingly popular Club Development guidelines and a
respected and established Community Development Tutors programme
has brought us to what will be, quite possibly, the future of Grassroots
Development where our ‘Grassroots clubs’ are in a position
to attain the ambitions that their community desires.

Ten participants
from nine Clubs embarked on the series of workshops. They represented
all levels of local football, from Valley Rangers in Kilkeel, Warrenpoint
Town and Newry City FC to Rathfriland Juniors, Camlough Rovers and
Tulleyvallen in Armagh.
Attending the
launch, from the Irish FA, was IFA President Raymond Kennedy who
addressed the members of the workshops and said, “ These workshops
can move Grassroots Development up a level..” he went on to
congratulate the Grassroots Development Centre in Newry and Mourne
as well as the club members who have embraced the opportunity to
take pro-active steps to further their club and themselves.

Rovers Christmas Eve football
Following
a successful football coaching morning organised with Malcolm Roberts
(I.F.A. Grass Roots development officer) at Halloween, Camlough
Rovers held another football day on Christmas Eve from 10am –
3 pm, opening their club to all boys and girls (both members and
non-members). Thankfully weather conditions were good allowing players
aged 5 years to 14 years to enjoy an active fun day of drills, penalty
shoot out and mini matches. Following a good response, the club
plans to organise more similar football sessions open to all during
the spring and summer months.
Camlough Rovers would like to thank Kellogg’s for their sponsorship
towards equipment for the youth football, without their help coaching
days for all would be limited. The club would also like to thank
all who supported the “Night at the Races” on December
29th.
The club are on a fundraising drive to enable them to meet the new
requirements set by the I.F.A. for the 2008/09 season, requiring
all clubs to complete work by April 2008. if anyone is interested
in supporting the club in their efforts to get maximum use of their
land in order to provide a football facility accessible to all age
groups, gender, background and abilities, or for any information
with regards to the club than contact Jackie Mooney (Chairman) 07775502261

Carginagh
Road Playing Fields
Official
opening of the showers and changing facility at Carginagh Road Playing
Fields Kilkeel on Saturday 9th December at 12noon.
The Council are delighted to announce the official opening of the
showers and changing facility at Carginagh Road Playing Fields,
Kilkeel and the local voluntary soccer clubs are now availing of
this new facility. The Council are acutely aware that the soccer
teams from the Mournes area had to endure difficult changing conditions
for a number of years at this site and this new facility will offer
the opportunity for young teams both male and female to change and
meet in a safe and secure environment.
The
Mayor of Newry & Mourne District Council Cllr Michael Carr said:
"I
wish the associated leagues who organise fixtures at this site,
the Newcastle and District League and the Carnbane League, every
success in the future and I hope that this venue in conjunction
with these governing bodies, the local soccer teams and Council
officials involved in the promotion of soccer, ensure that this
important facility becomes a centre of excellence.”
