The
2008 Newry City Marathon will take place on the Bank Holiday Monday
26th May
This is the inaugural year of the Newry City Marathon, run through
the historic streets and by-roads of Newry and Mourne, a beautiful
scenic area steeped in history, mythology and legend. Newry is Ireland's
newest city and has a population of 22,000 it lies in the South-East
of Northern Ireland bordering the Irish Republic and containing
the Southern parts of Counties Armagh and Down. Newry (from the
Irish: Iúr Cinn Trá meaning "The Yew Tree at
the Head of the Strand",) is the fourth largest city in Northern
Ireland and eighth on the island of Ireland. Though founded by the
The legends of the Celts and later by Norman invaders, Newry is
now a vibrant, dynamic city where you can sample Irish Hospitality.
The day will be a real family day out with a fun run, spectator
activities and for the more adventurous a full marathon and half
marathon.
