Carlingford Lough -
Awaiting the Pleasure of your company!
Carlingford Lough
is an area of outstanding scenic beauty located on Ireland's east
coast, mid way between Belfast and Dublin. The Lough itself is sheltered
on its northern shores by the Mourne Mountains and by the Cooley
range on the south side, with the commercial shipping port of Warrenpoint
strategically located at its head. Beyond Warrenpoint and Narrow
Water is the vibrant city of Newry, whilst just to the south of
the Lough is Dundalk, a bustling commercial centre and the county
town of Louth.
Newry &
Mourne District Council, over
the past 2 years have been involved in a Cross border Marine Tourism
Project based in Carlingford Lough. The project involved €1.3million
(Euro) of Interreg funded capital expenditure on improvements to
the marine infrastructure of Carlingford Lough, this included improved
canal access from Carlingford Lough to the vibrant city of Newry
via the Newry Ship Canal, automated lock access to Newry Canal and
newly installed navigational markers on its seaward approach from
Warrenpoint, there were also additional and improved berthing facilities
on the foreshores of Carlingford Lough at the picturesque villages
of Carlingford, Omeath and Rostrevor.
