Bagenals Castle

Conservation/Restoration

Since discovering the remains of the castle and reconciling them with the 16th - century map and drawings, there has been considerable professional and local interest in the possibility of restoring it. As it is a scheduled historic monument, nothing will be done which is not approved and agreed by EHS:BH through the Scheduled Monument Consent procedure.

Since this is such an ambitious project, and the details of exactly what level of restoration to adopt are open to academic debate, a panel of advisors from archaeological, historical and architectural sectors will be composed to review the ideas in advance and as they develop. At present the hope is that following an extensive restoration of the site what remains of the original structure will, where possible, be kept intact and a museum will house the important finds arising from the work.

The redevelopment of the overall site will result in a visitor atraction and interpretative centre based on the discoveries made during the restoration work; what is now Newry Museum will be relocated to the new site and will provide an exciting range of existing artefacts donated to the museum to compliment the as yet undiscovered ones on the Castle site. I addition to this a tourism information centre and educational resource will form part of the restored development.
