Portal Tombs

These Neolithic tombs have a very simple structure - a single chamber constructed from orthostats. The two largest of these upright stones stood on either side of the entrance and so archaeologists use the term PORTAL, ie 'DOOR-LIKE' to characterise these monuments. The truly spectacular aspect of these tombs, however, is normally the capstone that is set on top of the orthostats since it may weigh many tonnes.

The capstone at Kilfeaghan is believed to be one of the biggest in Ireland and is estimated to weigh between 35 and 40 tonnes.

Excavations at the site, earlier this century, unearthed various bones and pottery.
